Written by Richard Pearson, on 02-09-2010 21:34

This summer we had our camp at Phasels Wood in Hertfordshire. We will be publishing an article from the Scouts perspective soon.

Some of the pics taken over the week can be seen at this link:

Summer Camp '09 - Done!

Well we successfully survived another summer camp and fortunately this year there were no major accidents (just the usual assortment of cuts bruises scratches and grazes).

Many scouts took pictures of the camp this year so I have created a webspace to upload and download each others photographs so that we can all share them as I am aware that the photo section on this website is not very easy to use for that. Once everyone has uploaded all their photos to the site (or by end September), I'll move all the photos for you onto the Scout website. In the meantime you can enjoy the pictures at http://gallery.me.com/darren.muff#100164

For the record we have an award ceremony on the last night of the camp where the scouts can vote for categories and nominations. As well as being a good laugh, its a great way to capture the highlights of the week. This year I thought it would be fun to post the Award winners on here for parents to share in the fun as well.

Summer Camp 2009 - Camp awards

Camp Monkeyman
Chris (Paulo) Mayo
Chris stunned everyone with his ability to climb any vertical object, including some really high trees causing Adrian to faint a couple of times from the thought of the incoming paperwork we were about to fill in.

Stinkiest Feet
Zoe Jacobs

Best Card Player
Holly Griffiths

Most Fashionable Scout
Sam Brooks
This was a highly sought after award and was fiercly fought by both Jamie Rutter and Sam Brooks. At the voting stage Jamie actually took the award but following a judges hearing, Jamie was stripped of the award for wearing 'Sandals and Socks' (Shame on you) on the way to one of the water activities leaving Sam to take the prize.

Least Fashionable Scout
Alice Bishop
Alice was proud to get this award for her unconventional dress sense

Saggiest Boobs
Dominic Nessbach
It was decided to make this a judges only decision rather than having a vote as we didn't want to get into a discussion on this subject with a bunch of very curious scouts. To understand the reasons why Dominic won this award you will have to look at the photographs.

Camp Mud-Slug
Ellie Bishop

Fussiest Eater
Adam Drylie

Funniest Run
Dan Knight

Most Vomits in a 24 Hour Period
Holly Griffiths

Funniest Irish Accent
Donald McGregor
"I'm an Irish Leprechaun, Dah-di-dah-di-dah-di-dah" - Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggg

Most Useless Item of Kit Brought to Camp
All of Adrian's Tent's contents
Adrian is always 'prepared' and brought a fantastic selection of camp gadgets from a selection of penknives, axes and sharpening stones to professional climbing harnesses and equipment and professional kayaking kit.

Most Ridiculous Hat
Pete

Best Injury
Aaron
During a game of manhunt. Through the forest. In the dark (??), Aaron ran into a low hanging tree branch and 'pole-axed' himself leaving a selection of grazes across his face.

Scariest Pants
Henry
This very nearly went to Sam Brooks as during a tent inspection he had hoped that noone would check under his bed. A leader did and was brutally attacked by a pack of 5 skiddy boxer shorts narrowly escaping. Henry however took the trophy when he realised that his boxers were so smelly that he would leave them on the track back from the washrooms in the hope that they would follow him home. They stayed there all week having decided to wait for an owner who wouldn't abuse them as much.

 Nicest Person
Zoe Jacobs
'nuff said

Messiest Eater
Jake Muff

Camp Mossy Magnet
Adrian Moore
with more than 50 insect bites on his arms and legs

Funniest Camp Moment
Aaron Parak for his 'Spoon Trick'
Now this needs explaining. Whilst cooking a chili, Pete managed to snap a black plastic spoon in half. It was a clean break and could be placed back on a surface to look like it was undamaged. Myself, Pete and Aaron thought it would be an hilarious prank if we were to ask someone to pass the spoon and when they picked it up and it fell into two pieces we would then blame them for the 'accident' and taunt them with the camp slogan "SHAME ON YOU"! The spoon was positioned, the plan was put in place, all we needed now was a victim. The victim on this night was selected to be Henry. Aaron called Henry into the tent and Pete and I engaged him in conversation, asking him about how the meal should be cooked. During the conversation, Pete said, "oh Henry, can you just pass me that spoon from the table over there". To our stunned horror, Aaron (always keen to help), barged Henry out of the way and lunged for the spoon saying 'I'll get it"!! He picked it up, and was shocked when it broke into two parts in his hand. After we all fell about laughing Aaron's only defence was that "well I fergot dint I".

Best Instructor
Sam Brooks
Sam spent a lot of time teaching the newer scouts about all the safety procedures of using a knife and an axe

Worst Tent
Alice, Ellie and Eilidh
Words are not enough to describe the rancid, throat-tearing, eye-bleeding, smell that came from the girls tent after a hot sunny afternoon. The nearest description was that it smelled like a public toilet after a long hot summer without cleaning. I've personally never smelled anything like it and am still having trouble sleeping.

Best Tent
Adam Drylie, Thomas Blenkiron and Chris Mayo

Camp Dumbo
Aaron Parak
Selected mainly for his part in obtaining the funniest camp moment but also for his comment one lunchtime when he asked if the long-life milk we had bought came from older cows !

Best Meal
Thai Green Chicken Curry with Noodles

Worst Meal
 Soup
Now banned from all future scout activities

There were many other great moment from the camp that I hope the scouts will share with you over the coming weeks. (if noone explains why Eilidh and Henry had to be punished in such an original way then come and speak to me after looking at the video; I'll also share with you a really funny but X-rated comment to come from one of the youngest in the Troop!!) I had a great week and really enjoyed the company despite several days of poor weather. I need to thank Pete, Adrian, Burky and the Explorers for their help setting things up, running jobs and activities and for generally knowing how to gin-gan-gooley.

Cheers

Darren

DISTRICT CAMP 2009

Well we survived another district camp. The weather was torrential at times and sunny at others.

The scouts arrived on Friday night and pitched their own tents. Teresa had bought an extra 20 tent pegs which vanished in short order as they were used to anchor anything that was flapping. We had some great help from Den Crawford and the Explorers to pitch the mess tents.

There was a night hike on Friday night that started at 21:30! It was across farmers fields in pitch black and poor visibility. (click on 'Read More' below to get the full story and more pictures)
